Fish farm co-op creates more new jobs
San Vicente Cooperative welcomes dignitaries for 'grand opening' of restaurant
There are new employment opportunities for several members of the Apastapeque community
in El Salvador, following the opening of a new restaurant, adjacent to the volcanic crater lake where the 'San Vicente Cooperative' operates a fish farm. A number of dignitaries from the Salvador government recently took part in the official opening ceremony.
For the past few years, the fish farm cooperative has been having a difficult time acquiring talapia fingerlings, Dora Luz Baires explained to the Carpenteros. That shortage of fingerlings, and the resulting shortage of mature fish, encouraged the cooperative members to look for ways to 'add value' to their available supply of fish.
With support from the Carpenteros, the cooperative members are also hoping to construct their own fingerling tanks sometime in early 2006 to ensure an adequate supply of young fish. The fish are then raised to maturity in a netted pens which float in the crater lake.
