Fish farm co-op creates more new jobs

San Vicente Cooperative welcomes dignitaries for 'grand opening' of restaurant

There are new employment opportunities for several members of the Apastapeque community restaurantin El Salvador, following the opening of a new restaurant, adjacent to the volcanic crater lake where the 'San Vicente Cooperative' operates a fish farm. A number of dignitaries from the Salvador government recently took part in the official opening ceremony.

Experiencing the sights, sounds and people of Pushtan

This article is written by Ken Bosveld following his 2003 visit to the village in El Salvador where the Carpenteros had helped rebuild homes 18 months earlier.

BoysAbsolutely silent, staring intensely and hanging on every word from the translator, four sets of young eyes are transfixed on the six Canadian visitors.

No longer ‘boys’ though not yet teens, these four have shadowed us since our afternoon arrival in the remote community of Pushtan, El Salvador.

Through the eyes of Dora Luz Baires

Dora Luz is the first person to point out that she is a most unlikely person to play a leadership role in her community of Apastepeque in El Salvador. She is a woman. She is in her 30s and partially crippled from a misplaced vaccination when she was two years old. Her story is so uplifting because she overcame these odds and became a model leader, someone we can all learn from. This is her story.

First journey for Carpenteros

Two teams of volunteers assist in remote El Salvador village

group1'Home for Christmas' took on a whole new meaning in December 2001 for four families in a remote village in El Salvador.

Assisted by two nine-member teams of volunteers from Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Flamborough, the four families in the town of Pushtan were able to celebrate Christmas inside their small, but new, concrete and corrugated tin homes. Nearly 500 homes in Pushtan were destroyed by earthquakes which struck January 13 and February 13, 2001.
